Perez approved as Banking Commissioner

The Connecticut General Assembly approved Governor Dannel Malloy's appointment of Board of Alders' president Jorge Perez to the state Banking Commissioner with a unanimous vote Wednesday.

Let freedom ring. Today marks the 150th anniversary of General Ulysses S. Grant’s Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox. To honor the occasion, bell towers (like our very own Harkness Tower) across the country will ring for four minutes, beginning at 3:15 p.m. Mayor Toni Harp and professor David Blight will be on-hand to make remarks on the significance of the anniversary.

Carmen Anthony Steakhouse closes down

“It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to voluntarily close both the Carmen Anthony Steakhouse of Waterbury after 19 years and the Carmen Anthony Steakhouse of New Haven after 10 years,” said owner Carmen Vacalebre in a statement. “We have worked very hard to keep our doors open. Now is the time to stop the hemorrhaging of the financial losses.”

Pre-empting an entire book on the subject (titled “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House”), a piece published by Politico yesterday peeked into the lives of Bill Clinton LAW ’73 and Hillary Clinton LAW ’73 during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. And White House staff interviewed didn’t paint a very pretty picture.

Close to home. Yale Police Department Chief Ronnell Higgins’ latest email went out a little past midnight Tuesday, alerting campus to a robbery that took place at the York Street-Chapel Street intersection. Neither of the victims, both undergraduates, reported injuries, but still: That Google Maps location was far too recognizable.
