    THE NEWS

    • Four years after the recession, Yale’s operating budget is still in recovery mode. The University budget model for the 2013-’14 academic year indicates a gap of approximately $40 million between expenses and revenues, said newly appointed Provost Benjamin Polak. Though this gap is significantly smaller than the $350 million budget hole Yale faced following the financial crisis, Polak said faculty and administrators involved in the budget planning process — which will continue until the end of this spring — must not only find ways to close the gap, but also ensure that Yale has more funds to put toward growth and innovation going forward.
    • When roughly 40 more students enrolled in “Artificial Intelligence” in fall 2011, professor Brian Scassellati knew he would have to find teaching assistants fast. But when he asked every graduate student in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science, only one volunteered. Yale’s recent focus on science recruitment and a growing interest in computer science nationwide have combined to yield skyrocketing enrollment in computer science courses at Yale in the past two years. Although computer science faculty are excited to see growing interest in their field, the department is already feeling the strain on its teaching capacity. Record-breaking class sizes have overloaded graduate students and professors, who hope that the administration will allow the department to hire more faculty and fund more graduate students in the near future.
    • Donned in semiformal attire, roughly 180 women participated in the annual sorority recruitment held over the last week. Though sorority recruitment used to occur during an intensive three-day period, this year sororities stretched recruitment events over a five-day period from Wednesday to Sunday. The change in the schedule, an initiative that the Yale Panhellenic Council first approved last year, resulted from an effort to reduce academic stress and to allow participants to meet their other commitments during the rush period.

    • For the first time in decades, Dwight Hall is undergoing a major overhaul to update its organizational structure. Following the retirement of former Executive Director Alex Knopp in September and former Financial Director Ray Bendici last spring, the organization hired an interim director to allow for a “time of reflection” in which Dwight Hall could complete structural and organizational changes.
    • Undergraduate Career Services will ramp up the number of its international internship programs this summer, providing work opportunities in new fields and geographic areas. UCS, which currently offers the World Fellows and International Bulldogs programs as structured, Yale-sponsored summer work opportunities, will expand both programs to include more locations and also debut a number of new positions to students in fields such as engineering and global health, said Jeanine Dames, director of UCS and associate dean of Yale College.
    • Last weekend, Trumbull College’s Nick Chapel theater was host to an unusual collaboration, “the river don’t flow no more,” written and directed by Klara Wojtkowska GRD ’13. Unlike most shows on campus, “river” brought together graduate and undergraduate students, as well as an actor from Quinnipiac University. Wojtkowska said her project initially ran into obstacles, from recruiting actors to finding a performance space, which made her realize how limited the performance resources available to graduate students are.

    THE NEWS

    • The Sexual Harassment and Assault Response & Education Center will offer a six-week-long support group for undergraduate victims of sexual assault starting later this month. The group, intended for students who have had personal experiences with sexual assault, will meet weekly in the SHARE offices for six 75-minute sessions beginning at the end of the month. SHARE’s support groups, which have previously been held only at student request, have received positive feedback in previous years, said SHARE Director Carole Goldberg. The new undergraduate support group will be held annually, and they are the first attempt to provide a regularly scheduled program for undergraduates that will be open to all undergraduate students, she said.
    • For the past week, newly appointed Provost Benjamin Polak has been running back and forth between his new office on 1 Hillhouse Ave. and his old “nook” in the economics building up the street. Complete with a fireplace, a crimson oriental rug, a large, shiny conference table and several paintings in ornate gold frames, the Provost’s Office was missing one crucial component when Polak stepped in last week: a computer. Though the new PC and its two monitors arrived on Friday, Polak said he has not yet had a chance to make the place his own.
    • Charter schools may soon be on the rise in New Haven and statewide. Twenty-four groups across the state are poised to submit proposals for new charter schools and have sent letters of intent to the Connecticut Board of Education in advance of the board’s formal request for proposals scheduled for later this month. Of the 24 letters, four concern plans for schools in New Haven.

    THE NEWS

    • President Barack Obama was inaugurated for his second term yesterday in front of thousands of onlookers. The News was one of them. Read more about the inauguration ceremony in tomorrow’s News.
    • When Charles Musser ’73 started his junior year in the 1960s, he decided to take time off — for four years. College was a place for books, for writing, for art, but not for watching movies, and Musser, a film buff, wanted to watch movies. So Musser left Yale for four years to explore and make his own film. When he returned, he opted to create his own major, becoming one of the first Yale undergraduates to major in film studies.
    • Faculty members can now submit their annual activity reports this winter with only a few simple clicks and keystrokes. In a Jan. 3 memo to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, then-Provost Peter Salovey unveiled a new Web-based activity report that professors must fill out once a year to help the University track their research, additional responsibilities, and the grants, honors and awards they have received over the past year. The online form, developed over the past several months by the Provost’s Office and Faculty Administrative Services, replaces the Microsoft Word documents used to collect this information in recent years.

    THE NEWS

    • For students who are studying East Asian languages at Yale, applying to the Richard U. Light Fellowship is becoming a rite of passage. Since the 1996-’97 school year, the number of fellowships awarded to students has increased from 22 to 155. The growth in the number of Light Fellows over the past decade follows a language study trend in Yale College: While the number of students studying Chinese has increased by roughly one-third, the number of students studying European languages like French and German has been steadily decreasing.
    • Describing Ann Coulter as an “enemy” to the pursuit of an intellectual brand of conservatism, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist George F. Will delivered an impassioned defense of conservatism in America Thursday afternoon. Sponsored by the William F. Buckley Jr. Program, the talk was titled “Up From Liberalism, Yet Again” and drew hearty applause from an audience that included roughly 150 students, professors and community members in Linsly-Chittenden Hall.
    • Yale’s newest fraternity Beta Upsilon Chi (BYX) will begin its first rush process next week as the University’s only fraternity currently in defiance of Yale’s anti-discrimination policies. In October 2012, BYX chose to deregister with the Yale College Dean’s Office to maintain a nationally mandated policy of exclusively Christian membership.  All registered groups must comply with the Undergraduate Regulations, which state that all undergraduate organizations are banned from discriminating on the basis of religion. Fraternity members said Christianity is a key part of their fraternity’s life, and they are committed to upholding the Christian-only policy despite the challenges associated with deregistering.

    THE NEWS

    • The Yale Law School Ph.D. program received 82 applications for five spots in its inaugural class. The three-year program, which is geared toward students seeking careers in legal academia, is a product of “a long and deliberative process” among members of the Law School community, said Gordon Silverstein, assistant dean for graduate programs at the Law School. Though the program will last three years, Silverstein said it will resemble a six-year program — the standard duration of doctoral study in the Graduate School — because students will arrive with the common background of a three-year J.D.
    • As the conversation on gun control heats up across the country, the New Haven Police Department has taken scores of guns off the streets in three successive gun buyback events over the past month. Sponsored by the Injury Free Coalition for Kids, a national injury prevention program for children, the buyback program allows Elm City residents to turn in guns, ammunition and weapons safely and anonymously in exchange for gift cards. Last December, the police organized three buybacks, collecting a total of 160 firearms, both legally and illegally purchased. Spreading nationwide in the wake of mass shooting tragedies, gun buybacks have helped reduce the number of legal and illegal firearms on the streets and provided citizens with a process to turn in weapons without fear of prosecution, NHPD spokesman David Hartman said.
    • Over 40 students will meet weekly throughout the spring as part of a series of discussion workshops on sex-related topics run by the Sexual Literacy Forum. SeLF, which was formed last spring to provide an outlet for discussing issues about sexual culture on campus, has organized an 11-week discussion program that covers topics such as masturbation, birth control and setting sexual boundaries in small-group sessions facilitated by students. Five pilot workshops held last fall received positive feedback, and this semester’s program will consist of four sessions per week with 10 students in each session beginning Jan. 20.

    • Sex Week is returning to Yale this academic year. The weeklong series of events on sex-related topics usually takes place once every two years, but students decided to start hosting the event series annually in order to make Sex Week more institutionalized and familiar to students. Organizers decided to abridge the event series into Sex Week(end), which will begin Feb. 28, 2013 and last through that weekend. Sex Week(end) Co-Director Ruby Spiegel ’15 said she expects the event series this year to be less controversial than last year, when a 2011 report from the Advisory Committee on Campus Climate recommended Yale ban the event series.
    • In an effort to create a safer campus environment, Yale administrators are launching two initiatives to address alcohol and drug use on campus. Yale College Dean Mary Miller and University Secretary and Vice President for Student Affairs Kimberly Goff-Crews announced the Yale College Dean’s Office Task Force on Alcohol and Other Drugs and the University Council Committee on Alcohol in Yale College in a Monday night email to the campus community. The task force will gather information from the campus community on alcohol and drug use and make recommendations to the Yale College Dean’s Office, while the committee will recommend proposals on University policy to top administrators.
    • Early applications for the class of 2017 to most Ivy League schools are more competitive than ever, keeping with the trend of the last decade. Yale’s early applications increased by 4.4 percent this year, while Princeton and Harvard — currently in their second early admissions rounds since reinstating their early action programs in 2011 — experienced increases of 10 percent and 18 percent, respectively. Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Jeffrey Brenzel said in an email to the News that he believes some of the rise in applications across the board can be attributed to the increased perception that early admission programs, and particularly binding early decision programs, provide applicants with a better chance of acceptance.

    • On the fourth floor of the renovated Yale University Art Gallery, a terrace sculpture garden looks out onto Chapel Street. Standing along the edge of the balcony, visitors are treated to a bird’s-eye view of the city and campus below. Like many of the gallery’s new additions, it is a tribute to both the institution’s past and present — a reminder that while the building’s foundation remains nearly as aged as the University itself, the YUAG has not closed its horizons to the future. How has the gallery adapted over the last 15 years? Yanan Wang reports.
    • For the first time since it was instated over 30 years ago, reading week will no longer last a full week. Though administrators said the change eliminates the days during reading period when students typically do little work, students said the change puts added stress on the term’s end. Even so, the majority of students interviewed said fall break, which offers a reprieve from the long stretch between the beginning of the school year and Thanksgiving, makes up for the shortened reading and exam periods.
    • Though Provost Peter Salovey established the Faculty Forum this fall to give professors a setting to discuss their concerns, many faculty members still question whether administrators are doing enough to promote shared governance between faculty and the University. The Faculty Forum, which convened three times this fall, is one of two new governance structures founded at Yale this semester. The other is a revival of the Yale chapter of the American Association for University Professors (AAUP). But several professors interviewed said neither of these structures would fulfill the role of a faculty senate — a structure some said Yale should consider implementing.
