Federal law shapes withdrawal policies, causes confusion

While students and administrators debate possible reforms to Yale’s withdrawal and readmission policies, some officials have mentioned that certain issues are a matter of federal policy, extending beyond the University.

For readmitted students, inconsistent housing outcomes

Students readmitted to Yale College after withdrawing face a host of uncertainties. Among them: the location of their housing.

Mental health forum elicits questions about YCC influence

For many students, Holloway’s and Rogers’s inability to honor Herbert’s request at the mental health forum is another example of administrative inaction. Still, YCC representatives interviewed emphasized their appreciation for the administration’s willingness to engage in conversation.

New colleges to host annexed students

When the new colleges open in August 2017, they will welcome about 200 new freshmen. Less frequently discussed are those who will be joining them: juniors annexed from their residential colleges.

Students in wheelchairs find campus inaccessible

When Christina Kim ’16 showed up for the first day of her math class in Leet Oliver Memorial Hall, she could not get to her classroom — the building is not wheelchair accessible. Only after she consulted with Judith York, director of Yale’s Resource Office on Disabilities, was the class finally moved to William L. Harkness Hall a week later.

YCC proposes readmissions liaisons

The Yale College Council has proposed a program that would connect students who have gone through the readmissions process with those who are currently applying to return to the University.

Cultural Currency

The shabby facade of 295 Crown St., the home of the AACC, did not match the vibrant image painted in admission brochures targeted at minority students — a jarring experience that many students of color face when they arrive on campus. “Is this even Yale?” Nguyen’s mother asked her.“You shouldn’t come here. It’s not safe.”

Key to assault arbitration, barring contact is difficult in practice

An encounter between two students last May would have been just like any other — except that these two students were barred by the University from interacting with one another.

SAE sanctions: Drastic or insignificant?

Despite a college-wide email announcing penalties imposed upon the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity for violating University sexual misconduct policies, including a ban from campus, the sanctions may not be as harsh as they sound.

In cases of forced withdrawal, law provides little guidance

A recent lawsuit against Quinnipiac University has highlighted gaps in the laws surrounding forced withdrawal policies.

SAE banned from campus after violating sexual misconduct policies

After a formal investigation by the University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct into the organization, Yale’s chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity is facing a number of sanctions: a ban on on-campus activities, a ban on communication via Yale University email systems and bulletin boards, and a prohibition on the use of the name SAE in connection with the University. These sanctions will be in place until August 2016.
