Helen Garner, an Australian novelist who was one of the winners of this year’s Windham-Campbell prize in nonfiction, did not believe that she had won when she received notice from Yale. Garner thought the message she received from the University which said she had won $150,000 to support her work was a spam email. “I thought what the hell is this? Somebody’s having me on,” Garner said.
