- The pacifist society “Las Abejas” disassociated itself from the 10 anonymous plaintiffs who claimed to be members of the group when they sued Yale professor and former Mexican president Ernesto Zedillo GRD ’81.
The lawsuit, submitted in Connecticut District Court, alleges that Zedillo helped to cover up the 1997 massacre of 45 civilians, members of Las Abejas, in the village of Acteal. The Sept. 22 announcement on Las Abejas’ blog declared that the plaintiffs, who said they have remained anonymous to protect themselves from political reprisal, have no relation to the victims of the massacre and do not represent the intentions of the group.
- Though biking is a major form of transportation for Yale students, most have not had the opportunity to learn the rules of the road — until now. The first Smart City Cycling Skills class, a joint initiative organized by Yale Transportation Options and Elm City Cycling, a New Haven non-profit that aims to create a safe biking atmosphere, took place on Saturday and drew about 30 New Haven residents. The day-long class, which is designed to provide Yale and New Haven cyclists with a forum to improve their cycling skills, will be held again on Nov. 5. Holly Parker, director of Yale’s Office of Sustainable Transportation Systems, said the class emphasizes safely communicating and navigating the traffic within New Haven.
- Last spring, the Yale Panhellenic Council sought to begin a process known as “extension” — the introduction of a new sorority to the University — to help accommodate the growing number of female students interested in Greek life at Yale. But the National Panhellenic Conference has said Yale’s three sororities must roughly equalize their membership before a fourth sorority can arrive on campus. Though Yale Panhel officers had hoped to even out their enrollments by this fall, Kappa Kappa Gamma is still trailing its peer organizations in members, and Yale Panhel President Stephanie Cuevas ’12 said getting Kappa caught up may take another year or two.
