    THE NEWS

    • Seeking to ease the particularly rocky adjustment from high school to college, Yale is set to debut a brand-new summer program this year. As part of its upcoming Summer Session, Yale will offer a five-week “summer bridge” program that invites roughly 30 accepted high school students to campus to be introduced to the academic and social environment of college life. Though the program — which is free to every invited student, covering all tuition and housing costs — was initially conceived in 2008, financial constraints forced Yale College to put the project on hold until last December, according to Yale College Dean Mary Miller.
    • Struggling to define its place and make a profit in a rapidly shifting media landscape, the Hartford Courant, Connecticut’s largest newspaper, launched a new website last week. The website, CourantPlus.com, requires registration and is an addition, not a replacement, to the paper’s long-standing free website. It is, however, a drastically different experience. The new website is simple, easy to navigate and almost entirely devoid of the banner ads, videos and other interruptions that litter Courant.com. While some see the site as a forerunner to a pay-wall site, where readers would need to buy subscriptions for access, the Courant’s owner, the Tribune Company, insists that the long-term direction of the site is still undetermined.
    • Inspired by President-elect Peter Salovey’s commitment make Yale more innovative and accessible, the Yale Information Technology Service is unrolling a University-wide initiative to enhance its technological resources. In a Wednesday email to the campus community, University Chief Information Officer Len Peters released a draft of the first University-wide three-year information technology plan and solicited comments from students, faculty and staff before the plan is finalized in April. The effort to develop the three-year plan was launched in December and aims to assimilate information and feedback from throughout the University to strengthen its technological capacities. Recommendations in the draft address topics that include technology in the classroom, web and email strategy and digital storage.

    THE NEWS

    • The School of Management, which currently allocates roughly $3 million for combined scholarship and loan-forgiveness funding, has committed to increasing its financial aid to $6.5 million by 2015. The school will spend $1.2 million more on student aid in the 2013-’14 academic year than it allocates at the moment, said Joel Getz, SOM senior associate dean for development and alumni relations. SOM administrators said they hope the additional funds will help the school attract better and more diverse applicants.
    • Former Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman had a simple request for every student at his talk yesterday: “Change the world when you leave this institution.” At a Tuesday Pierson College Master’s Tea that was co-sponsored by the William F. Buckley Jr. Program, Huntsman — a former governor of Utah and U.S. ambassador to China — condemned the current climate of polarization in Washington in front of an audience of roughly 200 students. To fix the state of politics in the U.S., Huntsman said, the country needs future politicians who follow the University’s motto of “Light and Truth.”
    • As dusk settled on Beinecke Plaza earlier this evening, a group of 30 students and New Haven residents lit candles in a vigil commemorating the one-year anniversary of the death of Trayvon Martin. Organizers of the vigil — which called for an end to gun violence in urban settings — said they did not think the post-Newtown national conversation regarding gun control would result in meaningful reform for incidents of gun violence in urban regions.

    THE NEWS

    • After nearly 70 Harvard students were implicated in the largest cheating scandal in Ivy League history, Yale administrators are reflecting on the University’s academic integrity policies. At the beginning of February, Dean of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences Michael Smith announced that the university’s Administrative Board had concluded their investigation of nearly half of the 279 students in Government 1310 “Introduction to Congress” who were accused of illicit collaboration on their take-home final exams. Joseph Gordon, deputy dean of Yale College and dean of undergraduate education, said Harvard’s situation highlights the importance of upholding and re-emphasizing University-wide standards of academic integrity.
    • With the help of a $1 million donation, the School of Management will launch a three-year initiative this July to fund faculty research in leadership and organizational behavior. The Initiative on Leadership and Organizational Performance will provide funding for professors to investigate the ways in which people work most effectively, especially in the context of teams and organizations, and will encourage professors to apply their findings to projects at SOM and elsewhere. The initiative will also sponsor conferences on the research topics and facilitate the creation of research databases that can be shared with outside organizations interested in the faculty’s findings, according to SOM Dean Edward Snyder. James Baron, an SOM professor involved in planning the initiative, said he hopes SOM faculty will “undertake ambitious projects difficult to conduct elsewhere” as part of the initiative.
    • Hundreds of Yale students, faculty and alumni gathered on Science Hill this afternoon for the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Center for Engineering Innovation and Design. • When students moved back into their dorms this semester, they quickly became aware that their rooms and common rooms had been far from deserted during break. Students in Branford, Jonathan Edwards, Saybrook and Calhoun colleges have reported sightings of mice throughout the colleges since late last semester. Ian Hobbs, facilities superintendent for Branford and JE, said he has received roughly eight separate complaints from the two colleges he oversees, adding that mice typically hide in dorms during the winter to escape the cold. Although some students said they welcome their rodent companions, others have expressed fear and frustration over the creatures’ steady presence.
    • After two days of closures following a record-breaking snowfall that pounded the Elm City over the weekend, University and most city services will resume tomorrow amid ongoing cleanup efforts. City Hall, the New Haven Public Library and Gateway Community College will reopen Wednesday morning as emergency crews work to clear additional streets and widen traffic lanes. New Haven Public Schools and city senior centers will remain closed at least all day Wednesday, and city refuse collection efforts have been canceled for the entire week.
    • Spanish bank Banco Santander entered a formal agreement with the University last week when the bank committed significant funding to the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. For the next three years, Banco Santander will donate $250,000 a year to the center, according to the center’s Director and former President of Mexico Ernesto Zedillo GRD ’81. The bank will provide the funds through Santander Universities Global Division, a foundation that Banco Santander channels to support progress in education.

    • Around 80 students crammed into a classroom in Linsly-Chittenden Hall last Saturday as part of the kickoff meeting for Fossil Free Yale, a campaign to encourage the University to remove its endowment investments in the fossil fuel industry. The campaign has become a national movement and spread to 252 college campuses, including most of the Ivy League. According to environment activist and movement leader Bill McKibben, the movement hopes to convince universities to immediately freeze all new investments in fossil fuel companies and phase out existing investments over the next five years. A “green” portfolio, McKibben said, should be as important to universities as an energy-efficient campus.
    • This summer, as many students set off to work in cities all over the world, others will look toward internship opportunities closer to home. Undergraduate Career Services will offer an increased number of domestic internships this year in several lesser-known geographic areas where students have demonstrated interest and alumni bases are particularly strong, said Jeanine Dames, director of UCS and associate dean of Yale College.

    • Following the completion of a report evaluating Yale’s new academic calendar, the Yale College Council plans to work toward two policy changes to alleviate the stress of the shortened reading period. The Academic Calendar Report includes data from a Jan. 10 survey asking undergraduates questions about fall break and the three-day reading period — two new additions to the calendar that began in the 2012-’13 academic year — and recommends changes to the calendar and academic policies during finals. YCC President John Gonzalez ’14 said the YCC presented their findings to the Academic Calendar Report to the Yale College Calendaring Committee on Wednesday and concluded that the Council will focus on implementing the academic policy changes during the spring semester.
    • Though the School of Management is $25 million short of fully financing its new campus, slated to open in late 2013, administrators have broadened the school’s fundraising priorities under the leadership of SOM Dean Edward Snyder. The departure of Sharon Oster, Snyder’s predecessor, coincided with the end of a University-wide five-year campaign to raise money for Edward P. Evans Hall, the new campus, and Snyder said he has expanded the school’s fundraising objectives since the campaign ended. A proven fundraiser, Snyder — who brought in a $300 million donation, the largest in U.S. business school history, as dean of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business — has raised several gifts of over $1 million since his arrival at SOM in July 2011. While he said he will continue to prioritize fundraising for the new campus, he added that SOM is turning its sights to fundraising for other initiatives.

    • Over 9,200 applicants to the Yale College class of 2017 chose to send their applications to Yale-NUS as well, competing for spots in the Singaporean college’s inaugural class. Roughly one-third of the total 29,970 applications Yale received this year will be independently evaluated by the Yale-NUS Admissions Office. Yale Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Jeffrey Brenzel said he has instructed his team of admissions officers not to consider whether students have also shared their applications with the new Singaporean liberal arts college, and added that he cannot estimate how many students will be admitted to both schools as the two admissions offices operate independently.
    • A record 11 investment banks participated in an annual recruiting event at the School of Management that took place earlier this month. Superweek, which took place between Jan. 2 and 11, is an opportunity for banks to recruit summer interns from SOM’s first-year MBA class. Major banks such as Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley returned to SOM for this year’s Superweek, and two banks — Perella Weinberg Partners and Peter J. Solomon Company — came to SOM for the first time this month. The record-high number of recruiters this year follows the March 2012 appointment of CDO Director Julia Zupko, who restructured the operations of the department, SOM Dean Edward Snyder said.
    • This fall, Ivy League institutions simultaneously debuted new student life policies and programs aimed to bolster alcohol safety on college campuses. Six of the eight Ivy League universities — Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania and Harvard — have all rolled out new alcohol-related policies since last August, with a series of regulation changes occurring at Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. Administrators and students said they have noticed a shift away from direct disciplinary approaches to more creative programs, but students at four schools said the recent policies have targeted alcohol usage at the expense of Greek life.
