A contractor was electrocuted by a downed power line and died while working on the renovation of Yale’s golf course, Yale’s media office told the News.
The worker, employed by the Stamford-based landscaping company Eastern Land Management, touched a live electrical wire that had been brought down by a fallen tree during a recent storm, a Yale spokesperson wrote in a brief statement that referred to the victim as male.
An employee who answered the phone at the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner declined to identify the person who died but confirmed that the cause of death was electrocution.
The death was deemed an accident, according to the office.
The Yale Golf Course has been closed since 2023 for a major restoration project.
Yale Police Chief Anthony Campbell wrote in a text message to the News that he did not have additional information about the incident because he was out of state at the time. Campbell wrote that Duane Lovello, Yale’s head of public safety, was at the scene and had provided all available details to Yale’s Office of Public Affairs and Communications.
Neither Lovello nor Eastern Land Management could be reached for comment on Saturday.
“Yale offers its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of the deceased,” the Yale spokesperson wrote in the statement from the media office’s email address.
The University spokesperson did not reply to further inquiries, including about the victim’s identity, whether he had already died when police responded to the scene and whether officers had spoken to the man’s family.
New Haven Police Department spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart said in a phone interview that the Yale Police Department was investigating the man’s death. Bruckhart said he did not know more details about the incident.
The Yale Golf Course is located at 200 Conrad Dr. in New Haven’s Westville neighborhood.
