The heart of New Haven’s downtown shopping district on Broadway will soon feature a new cosmetics store, showcasing products from a local cosmetic manufacturer.

Bluemercury, a makeup, skincare and perfume retailer, will replace American Apparel at 51 Broadway. American Apparel, a clothing retailer that sold domestically manufactured clothes, closed its stores in New Haven and across the nation earlier this year amid ongoing financial strain and the company’s sale to Gildan Activewear in January.

Yale Mall Partnership Director Thomas Vitagliano, who manages 51 Broadway and nearby properties, said Bluemercury aims to begin its soft opening in September and host its grand opening in October.

“It’ll be a nice area once Bluemercury and L.L. Bean come in,” Vitagliano said. “It’s going to be really wonderful.”

Bluemercury, which is owned by the department store Macy’s, has plans to open 40 stores nationwide this year. The retailer’s 2,640-square-foot space at 51 Broadway will function as a showcase store, Vitagliano said.

Bluemercury joins two other cosmetics retailers located on the same block, KIKO Milano and Origins. At many of its shops, Bluemercury offers spa services in addition to retail sales.

Bluemercury operates five stores throughout Connecticut in Darien, New Canaan, West Hartford and Westport.
