Cross Campus just got a little bit more colorful.

The LGBT Coop at Yale set up a rainbow-colored closet door on Cross Campus today to celebrate National Coming Out Day, an annual, internationally-observed awareness day that promotes the LGBT rights movement. Organizers at the event passed out “Ask me about being _ at Yale” stickers and encouraged passerby to write their own ideas in the black space. Students could also pick up stickers on which the blank had been filled in with gay, trans, bi, lesbian or queer.
“You can really come out of the closet as whatever you want,” Ryan Mendias ’13, peer liaison for the LGBTQ Resource Center and coordinator of the event, said of the rainbow-colored closet door. “The LGBTQ movement has come a long way, but there’s still a lot to do. We hope this is a way for people to feel more comfortable about coming out.”
National Coming Out Day is held every year on October 11 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the 1987 Second National March in Washington, D.C. for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
