THE NEWS
- Polls are open this morningin what appears likely to be a dramatic Democratic primary. All eyes are on the mayoral primary, in which 18-year incumbent John DeStefano Jr. is confronting three spirited challengers as he runs for a record tenth term, but heated aldermanic races surrounding Yale’s campus have the potential to transform the city’s political landscape. Because there is no primary in the race for Ward 1 alderman, most Yale students casting ballots today will do so only in the mayoral race, in which DeStefano faces the most serious threat to his reelection since 2001.
- Just one year after University President Richard Levin announced that Yale would collaborate with the National University of Singapore in opening a jointly-run liberal arts college in Asia, both universities have moved ahead with the project and are readying the institution to open in fall 2013. With two years to go until Yale-NUS opens its doors, administrators have already worked out general plans for the physical plant and classes, and are now focused on hiring a first round of professors to build the faculty and help hone the curriculum.
- Emily Wanger examines how Yale is working to recruit more students who will go into the sciences and stick with them. Though Yale has made strides in its ability to attract science students to its applicant pool and matriculate them in its freshman class, the percentage of students graduating with diplomas in science, engineering, technology and math is significantly lower than at Yale’s peer institutions.
