THE NEWS

  • After 18 years as mayor, could the coming election be the one Mayor John DeStefano Jr. loses? Starting this week, DeStefano will formally have a challenger in his bid for a record tenth mayoral term. Clifton Graves, a civil rights activist and former City Hall attorney, will take the first step in a likely mayoral run. Graves, will be forming an exploratory committee by the end of the week, said he is running because of a sense of frustration with City Hall’s “arrogance” among city residents. There is a lack of participatory democracy in New Haven, Graves said, with many residents feeling “ostracized and demonized by the powers that be.”
  • As one staple of New Haven’s nightlife prepares to reopen its doors, another favorite could cut off its tap before the summer’s over. Rudy’s, a tavern that occupied the same Elm Street building for 76 years, will reopen on the corner of Chapel and Howe in early May, nearly a year after it closed its doors last summer. And while rumors have swirled that longtime Chapel Street haunt Richter’s will shutter its doors in the coming weeks, its owner said the bar will remain open at least through Commencement weekend and until the end of summer.
  • Allyson Moore, the new director of Undergraduate Career Services and associate dean of Yale College, said she has no intention of “hiding out in [her] office at 55 Whitney.” Moore, who took over as director April 4, previously served as associate dean of students and director of career services at Amherst College, a small liberal arts school in western Massachusetts where she said her office closely connected with many aspects of student life.
