- When students open their Blue Books next year,they will find a new section: “Media Theory and History.” For the past two years, English professor Jessica Pressman has tried to organize a community of scholars interested in the growth of media studies, convening monthly discussions with professors from various disciplines about how their work intersects with media studies. Professors and students interviewed said they hope the presence of media studies on campus will continue to grow, and they said having a heading in the Blue Book is a “good first step.”
- In his first budget speech as governor,Dannel Malloy did not mince his words about his plans to restore the state’s fiscal health. Addressing the state legislature in Hartford on Wednesday, Malloy urged a combination of tax increases and concessions from the state’s public sector unions to rein a state budget that is $3.67 billion in the red. He called for nearly $2 billion in union concessions over the next two years and $1.5 billion in new tax revenue, and praised the governor for boldly confronting the state’s fiscal problems. But whether or not his proposals survive scrutiny by state legislators is an open question.
