Inspired by a gym she saw on a beach in Rio de Janeiro, Karyn Olivier assembled makeshift dumbbells, a perfectly sculpted concrete ball and a bench-press, and rranged them on the floor with other concrete blocks. With her “free, goofy, and absurd, yet quietly elegant” piece, she aims to “give questions, not answers, otherwise the art is dead.” She hints at the culturally different views of exercise through her makeshift gym, with her use of eccentric lime green painted wood. “I want to engage the general public. My work is largely about doubt; any functioning being should always be in a state of doubt. I’m aware of the viewer, as I’m asking questions of myself.”
