Although most Eli faithful have probably never seen her compete, Molly Carapiet ’06 is the Female Athlete of the fall.
After leading the No. 1 women’s sailing team to its first place finish at the Atlantic Coast Women’s Championship Nov. 12-13, the women’s captain went on to secure an individual victory at the ICSA/Vanguard Woman’s Single-handeds, held at the University of Hawaii Nov. 18-20. Carapiet’s two first-place finishes and five second-place finishes during the competition’s 16 races helped her secure the title.
Trailing South Florida’s Paige Railey, 20-36, after 10 races, Carapiet started to gain ground on her freshman opponent. By the time the 13th race was starting, Carapiet had shrunk Railey’s lead to six points. After that, Carapiet turned in three top-three finishes to come back to beat Railey, 54-62.
After all of these fall successes, Carapiet is not resting on her laurels. Instead, she still has the spring season of sailing competition to focus on before she finishes a stellar career as an Eli sailor.
