An autopsy Tuesday failed to reveal the cause of death of a mentally ill city man who died while being restrained by police.

The death of Jermaine Bynum, 31, needs further study, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said.

Bynum fled family members who were trying to take him to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation on Monday, police said.

Police responded and said they found Bynum partially clothed. Officers said he became combative and tried to run into traffic on a busy street to evade officers.

Police said they restrained Bynum for his own safety as they waited for medical personnel.

He was transported by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police would not comment further on the case Tuesday.

“It’s still under investigation,” said police spokesman Gary Jenkins.
