Larry Kramer ’57, a prominent author and gay rights activist, received a successful liver transplant in Pittsburgh in late December and is now recovering.

In addition to suffering from liver disease, Kramer is HIV positive. He could not be reached for comment last night.

Kramer gained national attention after feuding with Yale officials over his desire to establish a gay and lesbian studies program at Yale.

The University rejected Kramer’s gift in 1997, but in April 2001 Yale and Kramer came to an agreement. Kramer donated his papers, and his brother gave the University $1 million for the creation of the Larry Kramer Initiative for Gay and Lesbian Studies.

Kramer is recovering from the transplant, despite a headline by an online news agency that incorrectly reported he had died during the operation.
