Julio Gonzalez ’99, who is managing the mayor’s re-election campaign, has resigned from his seat on the Board of Aldermen.

Gonzalez represented Ward 1, which includes Old Campus and all undergraduate dormitories except Pierson, Davenport, Ezra Stiles and Morse colleges.

Gonzalez said he was stepping down five months before his term would have ended to focus on Mayor John DeStefano Jr.’s re-election. Gonzalez had previously said he would not seek a third term.

“More than anything, I felt it was time to move on,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez also said he is moving out of the ward.

The Democratic Ward Committee will nominate three people to replace Gonzalez and DeStefano will pick one to serve out the rest of his two-year term. No timetable has been established for that process.

The mayor is on vacation and would not comment on who he will appoint. It is likely that Ben Healey ’04, who was endorsed Feb. 25 by the 30-member ward committee, is on any short list. No other candidates have declared their intention to seek the Democratic nomination in the September primary, nor has any other party yet put forth a candidate to run in the November general election.
