Fall is a busy season for the arts in New Haven.

The city’s two world-class museums — the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery — get rid of their by-now-stale summer exhibits and local artists, in smaller studios around town, get ready for lean winter months.

It is possible, as the year slides into October, to find a new exhibit almost every day. The problem is not so much that there is nothing to do — but that one can simply surrender in the face of too many options.

The highlights:
