Woman falls from State Street parking garage in apparent suicide

The death of a West Haven woman who fell from an upper story of a downtown parking garage Thursday afternoon appears to be a suicide, according to police.

About 3:24 p.m. on Thursday, the New Haven Police Department received reports of a woman who had fallen from an undetermined floor of the 32-story parking complex at 360 State St., just a 7-minute walk from Yale’s central campus.

When officers and paramedics responded to the scene, they found Joanna Abraham lying on the sidewalk outside Elm City Market, alive but unresponsive. Abraham, a 24-year-old West Haven resident, was swiftly transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where she died from her injuries shortly afterwards.

Detectives from the police department’s Major Crimes unit have started their investigation to determine the cause of the woman’s fall. A preliminary investigation has led detectives to believe that the fall was not accidental, as reported by the New Haven Independent on Friday afternoon.

“We think she jumped,” Sgt. Al Vazquez, head of the unit, told the Independent. “We have evidence to believe it was a suicide.”

Vazquez did not disclose the nature of such evidence, adding that the investigation is still ongoing.
