A fossil fuel divestment conference at Swarthmore College this weekend drew representatives from 77 different divestment campaigns, including Yale’s.

Fossil Free Yale, a group of students urging the University to refrain from investing its endowment funds in the fossil fuel industry, sent three delegates  — the maximum number permitted — to the Power Up! convergence, which lasted from Friday through Sunday. Ariana Shapiro ’16, a member of Fossil Free Yale who attended the conference, said the weekend consisted of workshops, training sessions, focus groups and keynote speeches about divestment, environmentalism, social justice and campaign building.

“We went over so many aspects of how to become successful at leading a divestment campaign, from social media, to knowing the ins and outs of the endowment, to working with the administration,” she said.

The keynote speakers included Aura Bogado, a Yale graduate and freelance journalist, and Ellen Dorsey, the executive director of the Wallace Global Fund and former chair of the board of Amnesty International USA.
