THE NEWS

  • University Provost Peter Salovey has been announced as Yale’s next president and will start his post June 30. Read more about his appointment, the presidential search and Salovey’s background in tomorrow’s News.
  • James Bennet ’88, editor in chief of the Atlantic, joked to an audience of roughly 50 Yalies that the main idea behind the Atlantic was to publish “really long stories.”Bennet spoke at a Davenport College Master’s Tea on Wednesday, where he discussed his career in journalism as well as the Atlantic’s goals — which he defined as publishing ideas to improve American society — before answering several questions from audience members. In his talk, Bennet said after moving from the New York Times to the Atlantic in 2006, he sought to create a new identity for the Atlantic that would keep up with the changing face of journalism.
  • A new study showing a striking bias against women in science faculty has made waves in science departments across the county. The paper, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and authored by Yale faculty, was discussed at a panel hosted by Women in Science at Yale (WISAY) on Thursday night in Davies Auditorium.
