THE NEWS

  • Connecticut’s state legislative session began this week amid doubts about the state’s finances.

Gov. Dannel Malloy opened the session calling for an “economic revival” in his annual State of the State address, pushing for increased funding to education reform, changes to state pensions and a balanced budget, despite recent estimates painting a poorer picture of Connecticut’s finances than previously believed.

  • Davenport, Timothy Dwight and Pierson Colleges are the only colleges whose in-suite bedroom doors have no locks, but that will change this summer.

Nearly five years after a Yale College Council proposal called for bedroom-door locks, Yale Facilities will install locks in the final three residential colleges, John Meeske, associate dean for student organizations and physical resources, said in an email. Administrators approved the proposal in 2008, reasoning that room locks would enable students to better protect their belongings even if suite mates neglect to lock the door to the suite.

  • Faced with increased enrollment and rising loan costs, the Yale Law School is scaling back its loan forgiveness program.

The Career Options Assistance Program (COAP), which partially subsidizes tuition loan payments for Law School graduates should they enter relatively low-salary careers, will require a larger student contribution from members of the incoming and future classes than it currently does. Law School Associate Dean for Finance and Administration Brent Dickman said the change reflects the more conservative budget projections the Law School has made in the aftermath of the recession, and was designed to sustain the program’s quality.
