Yalies stole from Occupy New Haven, Occupiers say

A number of Yale students disrupted the Occupy New Haven campground Saturday night, stealing signs and creating a “night of terror,” according to several Occupiers. Martina Crouch ’14, who has been affiliated with Occupy New Haven since it started last October, said she heard about the event from another Occupier and a Yale graduate.

Meanwhile, early Sunday morning, a photograph appeared on Yale College Republicans Chairman Michael Knowles’ ’12 Facebook wall showing his suitemate in Davenport College flanked by two of the signs, which read “Fox News Lies” and “Occupy Wall Street.” The photo was captioned “End of Tory Banquet.” It has since been removed, along with comments in which Knowles says that “in a functional city, the job would have been done by sanitation workers and policemen, as has been the case in New York, L.A., Oakland, D.C., Boston, and elsewhere.”

In a Monday interview, Knowles said he neither saw nor participated in any “raid” on Occupy New Haven’s encampment, and that the signs found their way to campus by unknown means.

“As I’m sure you know, by rumor, sight, or participation, signs regularly go missing at the Occupy site—taken by Yalies, students of other universities, and New Haven residents who are simply irked that a group of ne’er-do-wells have stolen a once-beautiful public space and destroyed it—and this seems to have happened on Saturday night,” Knowles wrote in an email.

Knowles added that he was uncertain if anything had even occurred Saturday night, as he said he passed the Green that night and didn’t hear or see anything unusual, and neither the NHPD nor Yale Security reported anything amiss.

The Freshman Class Council’s Freshman Screw was held on Saturday night.

Yeah, way to make all of Yale look sketchy, Knowles. Absolutely ridiculous that you’re trying to weasel out of culpability.

It’s one thing if you disagree with the OWS movement. But don’t take their signs. Seriously, that’s so low.

    • wtf

yeah, maybe they could, like, trade the signs for a job.

Michael Knowles will have a long, successful career in Republican politics.

Isn’t it a tad ironic that the students in question – who apparently view the Occupiers as nothing more than “ne’er-do-wells” creating a public nuisance – should advertise their own platform of civic virtue by engaging in what can only be described as petty theft?

Also, Mr Knowles, get down of your high-horse and stop using smug terms like “irked” and “ne’er-do-well”. You, your friends, and whoever it is you that claim to speak for have all behaved in an appallingly immature fashion, and your glib explanation here only betrays you for the gang of schoolyard bullies that you are. I’m no supporter of the Occupy movement, but I daresay that the people on the Green deserve a great deal more respect than you have shown them these past few days. You’re neither funny nor clever in acting as you do. Frankly, I think you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

    Why is Knowles’ suitemate unnamed?

  • amenhotep

Very nice “neutral” fact at the end of the post

    Real classy.

I wonder what would happen if some Occupiers stole property from Michael Knowles and his suitemate. Oh right, crime is only OK if it’s done by privileged white people. I should have remembered that from the financial crisis. I can only hope Yale kicks these petty thieves out of school and hands them over to the police. But that probably won’t happen, will it, because. . . they’re privileged and white. For God, for country, and for Yale.

Heavens, I do declare that I am mightily irked by these ne’er-do-wells.

Why is the YDN refusing to name Knowles’ suitemate? His identity is well known.

  • ycollege14

post his name in the comments. no impunity.

    Self-righteous conservatism at its best.

  • dolphinfetus

This is the biggest nontroversy to hit Yale’s campus since a tenured Harvard professor (Harvey Mansfield) came last week and the Pierson Master was berated in many an angry email.

  • Jaymin

Michael, for your own good, stop trying to justify the act with your bizarrely dickish critique of the Occupiers, and just say the two words, “I’m sorry”.

  • CBKM

I’d just like to note, as a campus conservative, that the rest of us find this as immature, inappropriate, and uncalled for as many here seem to.

  • otto

Michael, if you were more knowledgeable, you’d know that New Haven does not own the Green, it is not public property, and the police can not push anyone out of it.

I think you need a couple more years in that institution, if they can stand you.

  • Musicality

Sigh. Knowles and his fellow Tory friends have been responsible for a good many jerkish moves over the last semester. Anyone remember the “Occupy Occupy” movement and the “let’s spray these people with Febreze” thing? Yeah.

  • River_Tam

Knowles isn’t even a conservative – he supported Jon Huntsman.
