THE NEWS

  • School of Music employee John Miller MUS ’07 died Thursday after falling from the fourth story window of Hendrie Hall at 165 Elm St. Miller, the school’s manager of community programs, was discovered lying on the pavement in the building’s rear parking lot early Thursday morning. The University has termed his death an “apparent suicide” according to spokeswoman Kianti Roman, and the Yale Police Department is investigating the incident. News of Miller’s death sent shock waves through not only the School of Music community but also the city’s public schools, where Miller has been a central figure of music education for the past five years.

  • Although Yale’s campus and surrounding residential communities record some of the lowest crime statistics for urban areas in the country, off-campus students occasionally experience overflow from some of New Haven’s high crime areas, Associate Vice President for Administration Janet Lindner said. And while most undergraduates live on-campus, the majority of graduate students live off campus. This housing situation poses unique challenges in dealing with crime, graduate students say.
