THE NEWS

  • Open Yale Courses, a program that broadcasts select Yale lecture courses free of charge online, added 10 new classes to its offerings this month. This batch of lectures, recorded and uploaded in their entirety, include the political science course “Moral Foundations of Politics,” a Spanish course called “Cervantes’ Don Quixote” and “The Fundamental of Physics II,” among other science, social science and humanities classes. The newest uploads bring the total number of options on the Open Yale website to 35 classes across 20 departments, Program Director and Dunham Professor of the History of Art and Classics Diana Kleiner said.
  • For those studying at Yale’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Sunday nights often bring long hours in labs or libraries. But a group of seventeen students choose to end their weekends on a higher note. They are the Citations, the older of the two a cappella groups for students at the graduate school. The ensemble is not as well-known as most of its undergraduate counterparts — of whom the Whiffenpoofs are the most famous example — and does not tour outside New Haven, but members said singing together provides a great “chance to escape” from the heavy course load of a Yale graduate student.
  • Branford Master Steven Smithhas no plans to scale back his commitment to Yale after he steps down from his post next year. Smith, who has served as master for 15 years, said he will continue to work as a political science professor at Yale and devote his time to co-directing the new Yale Center for the Study of Representative Institutions.
