Wednesday’s Buzz: 3.30.11

THE NEWS

  • Yale administrators said any cuts to Pell Grants would have a large impact on the University’s finances, since Yale would attempt to make up the difference for students who depend on the Program.
  • Fourteen of 18 students interviewed said they would support a policy that allows Yalies to change from letter grades to the Credit/D/Fail designation because it could decrease pressure to earn high marks. Yale College Dean Mary Miller said she has spoken informally to her colleagues in the Dean’s Office this semester about possible changes to the system, including permitting students to change courses from letter grades to Credit/D/Fail after they see their final grades.
  • Come tomorrow evening, thousands of people are expected to gather on the New Haven Green for a rally protesting the shrinking of the American middle class. “We Are One,” a coalition of New Haven labor unions, clergy and students, will congregate at College and Elm Streets at 5:30 p.m. to protest rising income inequality, high unemployment, and what some organizers called an attack on working people. While the rally follows two high-profile rallies targeting labor tensions at City Hall, the “We Are One” coalition claims it has no political agenda.
