BOOLA BOOLA | Hockey holding steady in the polls

The men’s hockey team remains No. 3 nationally in the two media polls released on Monday. But it’s still No. 1 in the all-important PairWise rankings.

Yale, which tied a middling Colgate squad Friday before dominating Cornell the next night, received only one first-place vote from the voters in the two polls, compared to 24 last week. North Dakota, which beat Bemidji State twice over the weekend, solidified its grasp on No. 1.

The PairWise computer, however, treated the Elis more favorably. The system — which determines seeding for the national tournament — does not weight recent performance more heavily than early season performance, as the voters tend to do. Thus, Yale is still buoyed by its midseason 10-game winning streak.

In the media polls, Yale received some company from Union, which edged it out by a single point to capture the ECAC regular season title over the weekend. The Dutchmen hopped three spots to No. 4 in the USCHO poll and two spots to No. 7 in the USA Today poll.

Yale next plays March 11 against an opponent to be determined in the ECAC quarterfinals.
