THE NEWS

  • According to last week’s memorandum of understanding between Yale and Peru, all of the Incan artifacts held at the University will be returned to Peru by the end of 2012. The dispute has been compared to others about ancient artifacts that reside in museums far from their place of origin, but experts said Yale’s example does not necessarily mean other controversial cases of exported artifacts will be resolved on a similar schedule.
  • Only two aldermen showed up to a meeting with city officials last week to ask questions about changes coming to Route 34, but they brought from their communities serious questions and concerns about the project’s intentions. Constituents feel as if the plans for the project were pulled together without the input of the community it would be affecting, and are worried that this is just one more example of Yale’s concerns being placed ahead of the community’s, Ward 5 aldermen Jorge Perez and Ward 23 aldermen Yusuf Shah told city officials in the meeting. Both Perez and Shah said they are excited about progress for downtown, but Perez said he still has yet to receive the specific information he needs to support the Route 34 plan.
  • While the Yale College Council pursued an agenda this semester praised by administrators and students alike, some Yalies — including YCC President Jeff Gordon ’12 — worry that the council has left students in the dark. Changing University policies on issues that directly affect students such as housing and academics is his top priority, Gordon said, adding that the council has also tried to become a more accessible and helpful resource for students and student organizations this year. However, only two of 11 students interviewed said they know what projects YCC is currently pursuing.
