Schwartz ’11 exits ICU

After spending six days in the intensive care unit at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Mandi Schwartz ’11 is “still weak but is slowly gaining strength,” her mother Carol wrote in an e-mail to the women’s hockey team on Wednesday.

Schwartz entered the ICU Oct. 4. Her kidneys took a hit during chemotherapy and radiation, and fluid retention caused her to suffer from labored breathing and lung inflammation, according to a post by her family on the website CaringBridge. Within two days of moving to the ICU, Schwartz had about 30 pounds of extra fluid in her system.

Now Schwartz has lost approximately 25 pounds of the fluid gain and is off oxygen, her mother said. Schwartz exited the ICU on Saturday.
