Friday’s Buzz: 10.08.10

THE NEWS

  • Yale’s newly designed School of Management is ready for classes — and it hasn’t even been built yet.

Planners built a mock classroom — tucked away in Yale’s West Campus, a 20-minute drive south-west of downtown New Haven — that models a typical teaching space in the planned $189 million SOM building, which administrators hope will propel the school into the country’s top echelon of business programs. SOM professors have toured the room and given feedback about the space and what they think it would be like to teach in.

  • Last week Michele Sherban-Kline was an assistant principal at Wilbur Cross High School on Mitchell Drive, but now is head of the city’s teacher evaluation and development efforts. This reform is one of the primary steps in achieving the city’s goal of halving the school dropout rate and insuring all students graduate high school and college.
  • In the WEEKEND cover Jordan Schneider talks to the Yale professors who were instrumental in turning the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in West Haven into an institution on the forefront of experimentation with controlled substances as treatments for some of the most widespread and uncured psychological diseases in the country. Their findings? Special K may be more special than you think.
