Casablancans and Hammondites rejoice! The Strokes are coming out with a new album! The release is slated for March 22, and it’s going to be called “Angles.” When I first read the title, I thought it said “Angels,” and thank goodness it didn’t, because that would be stupid. Granted, “Angles” is still a pretty ridiculous name, but it’s nowhere near as bad as the cheeseball moniker of their last record, “First Impressions of Earth.”

In the middle of the 2000s, the Strokes seemed unstoppable: they put out two great records, 2001’s “Is This It” and 2004’s “Room on Fire,” won over my 10-year-old heart and were poised to conquer the world. Then they didn’t. They got a little famous, put out one mediocre record (2006’s aforementioned “First Impressions”) and then took a five-year hiatus. Moral of the story: too much hype is always a bad thing. The Strokes may not be the best band ever, but they are definitely a good one. For some inexplicable reason, however, music journalists have been notoriously divided about the group since they first arrived on the scene. Don’t let them poison you. “Angles” will be much better if we don’t expect much from it, neither greatness nor soul-sucking awfulness. Besides, there’s a song called “Gratisfaction” on the track list, which is not a real word but is a funny concept. So if “it” is “being mildly clever,” the Strokes have still got it. Let’s just hope they can pull it off.
