Pop-up record booths and vintage clothing racks lined the beer hall at East Rock Brewing Company on Sunday morning.
An event there featured fourteen record vendors from the East Rock neighborhood and across Connecticut and Massachusetts. Fashionista Vintage & Variety, a local costume, clothing and accessory shop, also had a booth. DJs Ben Lovejoy, Heavy Sound and Vision and Extended Family 860 played music and Best Video, a Hamden-based cultural center, also made an appearance according to Krystle Ryder at the brewery.
The “Vinyl & Vintage” fair had been a year in the making. Zach Minuto DIV ’15, an East Rock neighbor and the owner of the pop-up record shop Crated Records, first reached out to Ryder back in February.
“I can tell that there’s a real thirst for something like this in the neighborhood,” Minuto said.
Minuto has run Crated Records in his spare time for three years. Without a storefront, Minuto sells genres spanning rock, shoegaze, indie and jazz at local record shows, breweries and events such as the New Haven Night Market.
Ryder expressed excitement that the fair would showcase local businesses outside New Haven’s downtown area.
“There’s not quite as much in this space,” Ryder said.
Todd Lyon and Nancy Shea, the owners of Fashionista Vintage & Variety for 21 years, offered a curated pop-up from their nearly 6,000-piece collection, Lyon said. After the pandemic, Lyon and Shea moved their shop from Whitney Avenue out to East Rock, across the parking lot from the brewery at 85 Willow St.
“We specialize in clothing for men and women, but we are also a costume shop, and we rent out costumes for every event you can think of. We do a big Halloween, but we also do when people need to do news videos, when they need to do pranks, when they need to do photo shoots,” Lyon said, noting that the collection’s strongest eras are the 1950s through the 1970s.
Other vendors included Gee’s Records of Bridgeport — with labels in soul, jazz, hip-hop and rock from the 1960s through the 1990s — as well as Yankee Records, Leadmine Records, The Musicologist, Feeding Tube Records, Bad Kitty Music, Fred Yankees Vinyl, Jimmy Mac, Max Gigle, Rozz Tox Art, Sid Smith, Wanderism Travel and Sound and Shore Events.
The fair also aimed to elevate East Rock Market — the sushi, tacos, pizza and sandwiches market that shares the property with the brewery. Attendees were encouraged to bring food from the market into the beer hall during the event.
Ryder said the brewery’s packed calendar reflects its broader mission to build community in the East Rock neighborhood.
“We’re trying to knit together a lot more folks for cleanup events too,” she said. Ryder also highlighted the brewery’s upcoming partnerships with Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ and CT Eco Trivia events, which will bring in speakers from Yale and local wildlife organizations.
East Rock Brewing Company is located at 285 Nicoll St.
