In their second game of the season, the Elis fell to Hofstra in a nail-biter at home on Monday night.

Despite a gritty fourth-quarter push, the Yale Bulldogs (0–2) came up just short against Hofstra (1–1) on Monday night, falling 73–66 in a game that stayed within a few possessions until the final minute.
After going back and forth for the majority of the opening 10 minutes, the Bulldogs kept attacking and Kiley Capstraw ’26 had an and-one basket followed by an assist to Ciniya Moore ’28 for a 3-pointer from the wing to close out the quarter. Yale trailed the Pride by two points at the end of the first.
Capstraw continued the Bulldogs’ momentum with an immediate layup and steal to start the second quarter followed by a Luisa Vydrova ’27 3-pointer. The run put the Elis ahead 26-23 but only for a second before the pride hit a three to tie it.
The Bulldogs opened with energy but struggled to take care of the ball early, committing 12 turnovers in the first half, disrupting their rhythm. Still, their inside-out offense kept them within striking distance.
“I think one of our biggest strengths was playing to our advantages and really working inside-out,” said Ciniya Moore ’28, who finished with 18 points and two steals — adding to her strong season start. “We did a great job getting the ball to our posts and then knocking down kick-outs when the defense collapsed.”
Yale entered halftime trailing 41–38 but came out sharper after the break, tightening their passing and cutting down on unforced mistakes.
“At halftime, we talked about taking care of the ball and valuing every possession,” Moore said. “The focus was on being composed in the chaos and executing our offense — not letting them speed us up or force turnovers. Once we settled in and played at our own pace, things started to open up for us.”
In the third quarter, Hofstra was able to extend their lead to 10 points a few times, but shots like Ke’iara Odume’s ’28 3-pointer with 7:24 to go in the quarter kept the Bulldogs in the game.
The rest of the quarter unfolded in a back-and-forth battle, but still with Hofstra maintaining a consistent lead. With 10 seconds to go in the third quarter, a layup from Vydrova cut Hofstra’s lead to two, with Yale finishing the quarter down 58–56.
Capstraw, who led the Bulldogs with 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists while playing all 40 minutes, set the tone by hitting two big free throws in the start of the fourth quarter to tie up the game. Not only did she start the quarter strong, but Capstraw persistently made crucial plays on offense and defense.
Throughout the game, Vydrova continued to anchor the frontcourt with 12 points and nine rebounds, including key put-backs that kept momentum alive. With just over four minutes remaining, Vydrova’s put-back tied the score at 64–64.
But down the stretch, Moore was whistled for an offensive foul — her fifth of the game — ending her night. Moore, who had been successfully attacking the basket aggressively all evening, reflected on the challenge of staying assertive in those late-game situations.
“Honestly, that one’s on me,” Moore said. “I’ve got to be more aware of how the game is being called. Looking back, I should’ve been more mindful of the number of offensive fouls earlier in the game and adjusted how I was attacking. I’ll always stay aggressive, but when I’m in foul trouble, I need to be a bit more calculated — maybe rely more on my midrange and outside shot instead of forcing drives.”
With just over a minute remaining, Vydrova had another put-back to bring the score to 67–66, setting up a tense finish. But Yale’s next possession proved costly with a turnover that gave Hofstra a chance to reclaim control, and the Pride capitalized with a layup to go up by three.
With the ball back and 23 seconds left, Yale head coach Dalila Eshe called timeout to draw up a final play. Coming out of the huddle, Odume got a look from beyond the arc but the potential game-tying three rattled out of the basket.
Hofstra secured the rebound with 14 seconds remaining, forcing Yale to foul to stop the clock. The final moments became a free-throw contest, with Hofstra sinking its last four attempts to seal a 73–66 victory.
The Bulldogs will travel to Queens, New York on Friday to face St. John’s.
