A Yale Police Department officer’s contract was suspended after he was arrested in Stratford for charges of assault in the second degree.

Lieutenant Roosevelt Cesario Martinez, who has worked for the YPD for over a decade, according to past News coverage, was arrested by the Stratford Police Department on Wednesday. He was charged for an assault that happened on Tuesday, per Bridgeport Superior Court records

The News was not able to reach Martinez for comment.

Yale’s Office of Public Affairs and Communications confirmed that Martinez has been placed on paid administrative leave, but declined to provide further detail as to when his contract was suspended or why.

“We have nothing further to add,” an OPAC spokesperson wrote to the News.

Martinez was promoted to the title of sergeant in 2011 and has since been named a lieutenant. In 2015 he won the Connecticut Chiefs of Police Association’s Medal of Valor and the YPD’s Life Saving Medal for his role in rescuing an individual attempting to commit suicide.

Martinez will appear in court next on Oct. 8.
