After earning a pair of hard-fought wins against No. 10 Clarkson and St. Lawrence, the Bulldogs hope to continue their momentum into the last weekend of the regular season.
The No. 6 Yale women’s hockey team (21–5–1, 15–4–1 ECAC) is currently riding on a six-game winning streak and looks to close out a record-breaking season on a high note with two road games against Princeton (11–12–4, 9–9–2) and No. 9 Quinnipiac (28–7–3, 14–6–0) this weekend.
“We’re taking it day by day and game by game,” captain Greta Skarzynski ’22 said. “We know we have tough opponents to finish out the regular season and hope to continue our success we’ve had.”
Last weekend, Gianna Meloni ’22 stood on her head, stopping 47 of the 49 shots she faced. For her outstanding play, Meloni was awarded ECAC Goalie of the Week for a second time this season. Her first recognition of the season was announced Nov. 8 for her shutouts against Cornell and Colgate earlier that week.
Yale has not faced Princeton since its first ECAC matchup of the season on Oct. 29. The game resulted in a disappointing 2–0 loss for the Bulldogs. The same weekend, Yale fell to Quinnipiac in a 3–1 loss at home.
“We’ll learn from it and just get back to the details of it,” head coach Mark Bolding told the News in October after the Princeton and Quinnipiac losses. “We all want to score goals, that’s an agenda for our team. We’ll be better and climb the ranks. We’ll score, but it’s gonna take work.”
Bolding was right. The team put in the work and Yale climbed the ranks. The Elis currently sit in first place in the ECAC and are ranked No. 6 in the nation.
The Bulldogs met the Bobcats for a second time this season on neutral ice in Storrs, CT for the Nutmeg Classic. Despite Elle Hartje ’24 scoring two goals, the cross-town rivals scored three straight goals and won the game in overtime.
“Overall, we fell just short,” Charlotte Welch ’23 said after the Nutmeg Classic game against Quinnipiac. “However, we are optimistic that we can learn from this game.”
Learning from its mistakes, Yale has only lost two of its last 14 games, and the Bulldogs hope to extend their six-game win streak to eight heading into the playoffs.
“Even though we’ve had success this year there are still people that doubt us,” Skarzynski said. “That’s something that really gives us the energy and intensity we need to do well in our games.”
Yale faces off against Quinnipiac this Friday, Feb. 18 in Hamden, CT at 6 p.m. The puck drops at Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
