Just a day after the Elis fell to Harvard in the 135th rendition of The Game, played at historic Fenway Park, the Yale football team named its new captain for the 2019 season.

Wideout JP Shohfi ’19 was elected captain of Team 147 on Sunday. Shohfi was a key piece of the Bulldog offense this year, racking up a total of 836 yards and six touchdown receptions, including an exceptional one-handed snag against Brown. The San Marino, Calif., native has nearly doubled his receiving yards each season, and together with fellow receiver Reed Klubnik ’19, who eclipsed Yale’s single-season receiving yards record after tallying 1,143 yards, formed a dangerous duo that proved hard to counter in 2018.

A three-sport captain in high school for football, soccer and baseball, Shohfi set a national record for most receiving yards in a single season with 2,464 in his senior season. Sports Illustrated wrote a full-length feature on the star receiver and his lack of top-program offers despite his record-breaking high school career.

Shohfi is the first wideout to be named captain since Deon Randall ’15 in 2014.
