Scammers pretending to be law enforcement agents have targeted Yale international students and faculty members, in some cases threatening to arrest them for unpaid taxes, Yale Police Chief Ronnell Higgins wrote in an email to students on Friday morning.
Since the beginning of the year, Higgins wrote, the Yale Police Department has received reports of scammers who have threatened community members with arrest, revocation of educational credentials, deportation and loss of VISA status. The scams have primarily targeted international students and faculty members, Higgins said.
In the email, Higgins warned the Yale community not to disclose personal information or transfer any funds to any suspicious people demanding money to cover unpaid taxes or loans.
