A new Patagonia store will open later this month at 1 Broadway, the storefront at the corner of York Street and Broadway that was most recently home to Peabody 2.

Yale planned to announce the opening on Aug. 31, according to David DelVecchio, director of real estate asset management and marketing at the University. But a thin black covering draped over the store’s sign on Wednesday did a poor job of hiding lettering that read “Patagonia” in the brand’s signature font. As construction workers walked in and out of the store, racks emblazoned with Patagonia logos were visible through the doorway.

The covering over the sign was replaced later Wednesday afternoon.

Chunny Ding ’19, who passed by the corner location Wednesday afternoon, called the Patagonia store an improvement over Emporium DNA, the high-end couture shop that occupied the space before Peabody 2 moved in last August. But Ding added that he did not plan on shopping at Patagonia and would have preferred that something other than a clothing store replace the museum.

The Shops at Yale is hosting a competition to guess the name of the store coming to 1 Broadway. Of those who correctly guess the name of the new store, up to 25 winners will be randomly selected to receive $100 Barnes & Noble gift cards, according to the competition’s web page.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the web page indicated that the contest, which began on June 12, will run until the name of the store is revealed to the public.
