At 8:40 a.m. Monday, New Haven Police Department officers responded to a report of gunfire near Vernon Street and Davenport Avenue, according to a press release from the NHPD. The shooting took place about two blocks away from the Yale School of Medicine.

A Yale Alert message notified members of the University community half an hour later, asking people to avoid the area as police investigated the shooting. At 11:07 a.m., another alert announced that police had finished processing the scene.

The victim, an adult male, was shot in the leg by an unknown individual who fired at him from a car as the vehicle traveled down Vernon Street, NHPD spokesman David Hartman said in a statement. The identity of the victim and a description of the car are unknown.

According to Hartman, the victim was treated at the Yale New Haven Hospital Emergency Department. He was reportedly seen limping following the gunfire, Hartman said.

NHPD detectives are investigating the incident and encourage anyone with valuable information to call 203-946-6304.
