THIS DAY IN YALE HISTORY 1993 John DeStefano is elected to his first term as mayor of New Haven in a landslide victory. DeStefano takes 80 percent of the total vote, including 82 percent of the Ward 1 vote, and goes on to serve five consecutive terms.
