A sneek peek of “True Blood” season 6 shows actor Joe Manganiello snarling at a fellow member of his wolf pack. But Manganiello is taking a break from his role as a werewolf on the popular paranormal soap — to play yet another alpha male.

This fall, Manganiello will take the New Haven stage in Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire,” the inaugural show in the Yale Repertory Theatre’s 2013-’14 season, he recently revealed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal’s “Speakeasy” blog. Manganiello will join the ranks of Marlon Brando and Alec Baldwin as he reprises the role of the hulking, primal Stanley Kowalski, which he previously played at the West Virgina Public Theatre in 2008. In the words of Blanche Dubois, Kowalski is “like an animal.”

“A Streetcar Named Desire” will play at the University Theatre from Sept. 20 through Oct. 12.
