• This weekend, 500 students converged on campus despite the blizzard for the fourth annual IvyQ, a conference for undergraduate LGBTQ and allied students that Yale hosted for the first time. The sold-out conference — organized by 40 students from across all Ivy League schools — ran roughly 30 workshops as well as opening and closing events, though eight workshops and social activities scheduled for Friday evening were canceled due to the weather. The second annual LGBTQ Gay and Lesbian Alumni Association (GALA) Reunion, which was also scheduled to take place this weekend, was canceled due to closed venues and canceled flights, said Anna Wipfler ’09, the reunion’s co-chair.
  • In 1963, 10 percent of grades awarded by Yale College were A’s. Last spring, that percentage was 62, according to the preliminary report compiled by the Yale College Ad-Hoc Committee on Grading Policy. Prompted by rising GPA cutoffs for high honors and rising grade averages nationwide, Yale College Dean Mary Miller commissioned the committee earlier this fall. Chaired by economics professor Ray Fair, the committee presented its preliminary findings at last Thursday’s Yale College faculty meeting to stimulate further discussion on grading policy and recommend preliminary measures that could be put in place for the 2014-’15 school year, Miller said. The committee’s proposals include increasing transparency across departments by releasing grade breakdowns each semester and a shift from the letter grade system to a 59-100 point scale.
