- Nearly 1,100 people filled Woolsey Hall on Friday night to see a colorful celebration of South Asian dance, music and even a live episode of Yale’s own “Indian Idol.” Roshni is the largest event put on by Yale’s South Asian Society (SAS) in the fall semester, with 11 performances ranging from Nepali ethnic dance to Sur et Veritaal, a South Asian a cappella group. Since Roshni began in 2002, it has evolved from drawing small crowds in Battell Chapel to celebrating its second year filling Woolsey Hall nearly to capacity this past Friday.
- Graduate students in many of Yale’s humanities and social science departments can now find a home in one of the new spaces created by the Graduate School Dean’s Office. Continuing an initiative launched last year, Graduate School Dean Thomas Pollard said he has transformed approximately 2,000 square feet of space into work places for humanities and social science graduate students with the financial assistance of a grant from the Provost’s Office. Pollard said the new spaces house students from the three large departments that suffered the most from space shortage: History, English and American Studies.
- Last Saturday, the Women in Leadership Conference encouraged women to achieve success in their careers to make work environments more conducive to raising families simultaneously. Roughly 300 Yale students came to the Sterling Law Auditorium to attend the conference, an annual event hosted by Yale’s Women’s Leadership Initiative. The conference included three keynote speakers — Anne-Marie Slaughter, former head of policy for the State Department; Marie Wilson, founder of the White House Project; and Jennifer Holleran, executive director of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s nonprofit, Startup: Education; and 12 profession-specific panels on government, finance, law, marketing, STEM and media.
