- Professors debated ways to reduce the uncertainty surrounding course choices during shopping period at the first Yale College faculty meeting of the 2012-’13 academic year. The faculty meeting presented three reports: one from the Teaching, Learning, and Advising Committee on shopping period, one from the Executive Committee detailing cases seen in spring 2012 and a semi-annual report of sexual misconduct complaints. Yale College Dean Mary Miller also announced the creation of a new ad-hoc committee that will examine the grading patterns in Yale College in light of concerns about grade inflation.
- On the evening of March 8, 1987, Bernice Martin was raped and murdered in her apartment in Manchester, Conn.
More than five years later, her granddaughter’s husband, Richard Lapointe, was convicted of the crime and sentenced to life imprisonment without possibility of release. Now, the courts are questioning the confessions that have kept Lapointe behind bars for the past two decades.
- Hungry Yalies and New Haven residents will soon be able to eat out for less via a new discount card program called Save Haven.
The program, which organizers said will be on sale by late October, requires a one-time, $10 purchase of a Save Haven card, which then provides access to discounts at 17 restaurants around Yale. Discounts span free bubble tea with a purchase of $15 or more at Ivy Noodle to a 20 percent discount at Ashley’s Ice Cream.
