THE NEWS

  • A roughly 50-year-old archaeology course that sent students to excavate historic sites around Connecticut will no longer be offered next fall. The course was required for graduate and undergraduate archaeological studies students, but professors said its time-intensiveness and difficulties finding archaeological sites close to campus made it increasingly hard to offer during the academic year. Instead, archaeology students will now have to take a course approved by Yale at a summer field school in the United States or abroad.
  • A state election reform bill passed a key hurdle last week
when it was approved by the General Assembly’s government administration and elections committee. The bill, proposed by Gov. Dannel Malloy and Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, would allow voters to register to vote on Election Day and online, and enable harsher punishments for impeding voting access. The committee voted largely along party lines, with all 10 Democrats and one Republican voting in favor of the reforms and four Republicans voting against it.
  • A meeting between School of Management students and a former South Korean dictator over spring break has sparked controversy in South Korea and raised questions about the morality of meetings with controversial figures abroad. During the trip to South Korea — part of a first-year SOM requirement for which students analyze business and management issues abroad — a group met with Chun Doo-hwan, a former dictator who took power in a 1979 military coup.
