• As the Hall of Graduate Studies approaches its 80th birthday, the deterioration of the building has begun to take a toll on some of its inhabitants. HGS, which has not undergone a major renovation since it was built in 1932, is home to classrooms, administrative offices and graduate student housing. Six staff and faculty interviewed who work in the building said they have observed many general maintenance problems, such as water damage, paint chipping and poor ventilation.
  • As Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity puts its official Yale expansion efforts on hold, another fraternity is looking to establish a chapter on campus. Chi Psi Fraternity has placed Yale on its list of target schools for possible expansion, said Chi Psi leadership consultant Justin Froeber, who has been on campus since Wednesday to reach out to student leaders and observe Yale’s social culture. Froeber said his visit, which will conclude Thursday, is intended to help the fraternity determine whether it is feasible to create a Yale chapter, adding that Chi Psi has not yet decided whether it will expand to the University.
  • Over 70 New Haven workers and immigrant advocates travelled to Hartford on Wednesday to oppose the Secure Communities immigration enforcement program that launched in Connecticut that same day. As the widely criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program rolled out statewide, the group delivered a letter to Governor Dannel Malloy expressing “alarm” at Secure Communities, which will begin checking fingerprints of suspected criminals against ICE databases in a bid to deport those living in the country illegally.
