• On October 14th, 2010, Professor Melanie Boyd’s ’90 23-person seminar, Theorizing Sexual Violence, met as usual in the Hall of Graduate Studies. But this wasn’t just any other class session. Less than twenty-four hours before, a group of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity pledges had paraded around Old Campus, chanting a series of sexually degrading phrases. The event could not be ignored, and Boyd shuffled the syllabus appropriately so that the class could discuss the issue.

    Boyd began teaching at Yale five years ago in the Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies department. But this fall, she was appointed Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, and now devotes all of her time to her work with the Dean’s Office, leading efforts to reshape how the University handles its cases of sexual assault. MADELINE BUXTON reports.

  • Despite the recent addition of new amenities on Yale’s West Campus intended to better connect faculty members with each other, many researchers still feel the site is isolated and relatively empty.

    Within the past year, administrators have expanded dining options at the facility, increased the frequency of shuttles from Science Hilland added weekly yoga classes. University President Richard Levin said faculty members will form better relationships as the more faculty members fill the largely vacant 136-acre space.

  • Though Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences witnessed dramatic growth over the past decade, the current 691 associate, assistant and full professors marks a decrease of nearly 20 members since last fall. The faculty size has hovered around 700 after administrators first decided to stall hiring when the economic downturn hit in 2008. But despite the University’s improved financial state, Provost Peter Salovey said Wednesday that authorized faculty searches occurring this fall are still mainly intended to fill vacancies created by retirements or departures, not contribute to an overall growth in faculty that four department chairs said is necessary.
