• A week after Tropical Storm Irene robbed about 18,000 New Haven homes of their power, many Yale students’ homes on Lynwood Place were among the last still in the dark Sunday evening. Despite a vow by United Illuminating Company to restore power to all New Haven customers by Saturday night, 203 homes in New Haven were without power Sunday evening. In a press release Saturday, United Illuminating, Greater New Haven’s main power supplier, promised to return power to “virtually all customers” by the end of Sunday.
  • The Yale Provost Office is considering installing security cameras in campus machine shops to increase student and faculty safety. Still, some questions remain over the possible privacy concerns of 24-hour supervision in the shops, so the office is only considering implementation in shops that request the new technology. At this time, representatives from the Sterling Chemical Laboratory shop where Michele Dufault ’11 died have not asked for these cameras.
  • The YDS dean search committeewill hone in on about five of roughly 60 candidates beginning this week, with committee members mostly focusing on candidates who are currently leaders at seminaries or other divinity schools.
