The New York Times’ online paywall went up Monday, and the library’s subscription to its online image edition shut down.
Gregory Eow, a history librarian, said the library’s subscription to the Times’ online image edition, which normally displays the color print format of the Times through the library website, should remain unchanged with the implementation of the paywall. But as of Monday the library has not received any new online issues.
David Means, the vendor representative from NewsBank, the company that provides Yale with the Times’ image edition, said he found out Tuesday that universities were not receiving the image edition and NewsBank has contacted the Times and their intermediary, NewsStand, to address the problem. Means said he hopes the glitch will be fixed Thursday.
He added that he does not know whether the glitch is related to the paywall but that he has never before encountered such a problem.
“We’re unable to fix it,” Means told the News yesterday. “We’re scrambling to get some answers.”
When the image edition begins working again, Means said subscribers will be able to see the missed issues.
The library began subscribing to the image edition in May, 2010.
