Thanks to President Barack Obama, New Haven will receive up to $300,000 in federal money for its snowstorm response operations in mid-January.
Calling the 72-hour period beginning Jan. 11 a “major disaster,” the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will reimburse the city for at least 75 percent of snow removal costs during that period, said city spokesman Adam Joseph.
According to a press release, Gov. Dannel Malloy’s application to FEMA, sent Feb. 18, also won federal aid for five other counties in Connecticut.
“The major disaster declaration that President Obama declared will help our cities and towns with the gaping holes in their budgets left by a brutal, relentless winter,” Malloy said in the release. Malloy added that he is appealing FEMA’s ruling denying aid to Windham and Middlesex Counties.
The city far exceeded its $500,000 budget for snow removal this year, due to an usual onslaught of significant snowstorms.
Joseph said another state application is pending that would reimburse the city for snow removal operations during the Jan. 28 snowstorm.
